Native American Pottery
Native American Indian Pottery comes in many different styles, designs, colors, shapes and sizes. Often, the term "Native American Pottery" refers to pottery made by the Pueblo Indians, however in recent times, the Navajo Nation has certainly made their mark on the Native American pottery world with Navajo Horse Hair pottery and painted, etched pottery.
Pueblo Pottery:
Pueblo pottery making is an ancient art form. While one pueblo often adapts certain features from a neighbor, each has its distinctive characteristics. Each uses clay found nearby to create their pottery and the methods of firing differ, as is shown by the color and finish of each pot. Each pueblo has its distinctive designs, many of them handed down or copied from those of prehistoric times.
Navajo Etched Pottery:
Many Navajo potters combine traditional carving, etching and painting techniques with more modern and contemporary styling. Susie Charlie is credited with the development of "Navajo Etched" pottery which is approximately 19 years old. The Charlie family continues to product the pottery to this day and it is as beautiful as ever. There are several members of the family that now produce this style. This pottery is created by starting with a ceramic pot which the artist applies several colors of paint. Then, they etch free-hand many different animals, symbols, patterns and designs with a simple blade-like tool. The result is a very unique style of pottery. The shapes vary from small pots, vases, bowls & jewelry boxes to large olla sizes.
